Monash Art Ensemble
The Monash Art Ensemble workshops, performs and records projects that focus on the music of local and international composer/improvisers using members of the Australian Art Orchestra and students from the music faculty at Monash University. These projects are always inspiring, and constantly challenge long-held technical and musical limitations.
In 2013 the MAA won a Bell Award for its first self-titled recording that features music by Paul Grabowski.
George Lewis explained that when playing his music we had to forget all we learned in jazz school, not interact with other players and not build dynamic momentum. These components were all contained within the compositional structures.
He also modelled an extraordinarily flexible approach to ensemble direction that struck a fine balance between challenging us to work outside our conceptual and technical comfort zones and exploiting each player’s strengths to shape unique musical outcomes.
Hexis, the cd that documents this project, is full of extraordinarily beautiful and haunting music.
